Digestive Health and Gut Balance

Gut Health: Why Is It Important?

A healthy gut contains good bacteria and immune cells that ward off infectious agents like bacteria, viruses and fungi. A healthy gut also communicates with the brain through nerves and hormones, which helps maintain general health and well-being. In recent years, your gastrointestinal tract has been linked to numerous aspects of health, like emotional stress and chronic illnesses such as cancer and diabetes.

This means how your gut acts impacts other processes in your body. It’s the most central organ that other organs depend on for life-supporting nutrition.

The Microbiome

Your microbiome plays a critical role in your overall health. It helps your body with many different functions, including:

  • Digesting and absorbing nutrients
  • Synthesizing vitamins
  • Creating certain needed vitamins from foods
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Protecting the body from ingested pathogens
  • Excreting waste products

Symptoms of an Unbalanced Gut

There can be many, sometimes subtle, signs that your gut isn’t in balance. Look for the following for clues that something may be wrong:

  • Frequent stomach upset
  • Intolerance of certain foods
  • Changes in bathroom habits
  • Intense cravings
  • Unintended weight fluctuations
  • Skin irritations or autoimmune disorders
  • Migraines or frequent headaches
  • Difficulty sleeping or excessive fatigue
  • Irritability or other mood changes
  • Recent antibiotic use

Please contact me if you suspect your digestive system is out of balance!
